Ms. Chi Ping Lau, choreographer, dancer and dance educator, is the founder and Artistic Director of the Chi-Ping Dance Group. She is a graduate of the Laban Centre, University of London, and is a former member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, the Canadian Dance Teachers’ Association and a former director of Community Folk Art Council of Metro Toronto.
Ms. Lau studied Chinese dance under the renowned dance artist Sai-Fun Ng, and ballet and national folk dances under Stephen Kwok and Pearl Chan. While in Hong Kong, Ms. Lau taught dance instructors at the Hong Kong Education Department, the Recreation & Sports Department, and the Hong Kong Festival. She also served as an instructor in the dance program at several universities.
After moving to Toronto, Ms. Lau received the Award of Outstanding Achievement presented by the Chinese Community Centre in 1986. In 1992, she received the Award of Recognition from the City of Scarborough for promoting dancing to the community. She also participated in special training workshops for overseas Chinese dance teachers, offered by the Ministry of Culture in Beijing in 1993. She received the Certificate of Chinese Dance Grade Examination, advanced level, from the Beijing Dance Academy. In 1997, she received the City Award of Merit from the City of Scarborough for accomplishments in the field of Cultural Achievement & Community Activity. In 2000, she received the Volunteer Award from Ontario Government. In 2012, she was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Next month, she will receive the Scarborough-Agincourt Silver Jubilee Medal.
Though she has retired from Chi-Ping Dance Group, Ms. Lau continues to serve as Advisor to the Chinese Collective Arts Association, as well as occasionally choreographing special dances for the CCAA’s annual gala and teaching students for regional and national competitions.
